Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization)

Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, is the USCIS form used to request an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), the US work permit card, or to replace or renew one.

How it works

You file under an eligibility category code that matches your situation, for example (c)(9) for a pending green card application, (c)(3)(B) for post-completion OPT, (c)(3)(C) for STEM OPT, or (c)(8) for pending asylum. Many categories can be filed online.

If approved, you receive an EAD. The automatic extension of expiring EADs ended for renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025, so file renewals as early as USCIS allows (usually up to 180 days before expiry).
