STEM OPT Extension
STEM OPT is a 24-month extension of Optional Practical Training for F-1 students who earned a degree in an eligible science, technology, engineering, or math field and work for an employer enrolled in E-Verify.
Requirements
- A degree on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List (it can be a prior US degree in some cases).
- An employer enrolled in E-Verify that signs a Form I-983 training plan with you.
- A timely Form I-765 filed before your current OPT ends. Filing on time extends work permission while the case is pending.
Unemployment is capped at 150 days across the full OPT and STEM OPT period. You must report to your school regularly. Combined with regular OPT, STEM OPT gives up to 36 months of work, often enough for several H-1B lottery tries. See our STEM OPT guide.
