Immigrate to Alberta: AAIP Streams, Jobs and Settling In

Alberta is one of Canada's prairie provinces, next to British Columbia and the Rocky Mountains. People choose it for strong wages in energy, construction, agriculture, and health care, lower housing costs than Vancouver or Toronto, and no provincial sales tax. Calgary and Edmonton are large, diverse cities, and Banff and Jasper national parks are a short drive from Calgary.

The winters are long and cold, and the economy moves with oil and gas prices, so job markets can change quickly. Many newcomers first come on a work permit, gain Alberta experience, and then apply to the AAIP from inside the province.

Alberta also has one community in the federal Rural Community Immigration Pilot: Claresholm.

Alberta's 2026 allocation from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) started at 6,403 nominations. On August 10, 2026, IRCC added 200 more, raising the total to 6,603.

AAIP's processing page (mid-September 2026) shows how the space is being used:

In total, 4,864 nominations had been issued and 1,739 spaces were left, with roughly 36,000 eligible Expressions of Interest waiting in the pools. These figures change every week, so check AAIP's processing information page for the latest numbers.

On March 17, 2025, Alberta stopped selecting Express Entry candidates through its family connection and occupation-in-demand pathways. Alberta has not closed a whole stream since 2025, but space in the smaller streams is tight.

Five worker streams and pathways use the Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI) system: Alberta Opportunity, Alberta Express Entry, Dedicated Health Care, Rural Renewal, and Tourism and Hospitality.

1. Submit a WEOI. You fill it out in one session in the AAIP portal. It is scored out of 100 points, costs $135 (since April 7, 2026), and stays valid for one year. Since May 26, 2026, you can update a WEOI after you submit it.
2. Wait for a draw. AAIP runs regular draws by stream and pathway. It picks people based on WEOI score, labor market needs, available nominations, and application volumes. Recent draws in September 2026 targeted the Alberta Opportunity Stream, the Accelerated Tech Pathway, and the Dedicated Health Care Pathway.
3. Accept and apply. If invited, you have 15 days to accept and then 30 days to complete, submit, and pay for the application. The worker stream fee is $1,500.
4. Nomination, then IRCC. If Alberta nominates you, you apply for permanent residence with IRCC. Express Entry nominees get 600 extra points in the federal Express Entry system.

Entrepreneur streams use a separate Business Expression of Interest, and AAIP says business applications are evaluated as they are received. Alberta's online Eligibility Explorer (launched June 17, 2026) helps you see which streams fit before you pay for a WEOI.

Alberta's AAIP draws show where the province wants workers most:

• Health care: nurses, physicians, and other licensed health professionals through the Dedicated Health Care Pathway.
• Technology: software, data, and engineering roles through the Accelerated Tech Pathway.
• Construction, agriculture, and aviation: through the Express Entry Priority Sectors pathway.
• Law enforcement: police service occupations with employers in the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police.
• Tourism and hospitality: eligible hotel, restaurant, and tourism jobs for people already working in Alberta.
• Energy and trades: oil and gas, electricians, welders, heavy equipment technicians.

Major cities: Calgary (the largest city and a hub for energy and tech head offices), Edmonton (the capital, with government, health care, and research jobs), Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, and Fort McMurray in the oil sands region.

Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)

If you move to Alberta from outside Canada, you may be covered from the date you establish residency, as long as you apply within 3 months. If you apply later, coverage starts when your application is processed, not on the day you arrived. People moving from another province usually wait until the first day of the third month. Work permit holders may be eligible; check the AHCIP rules for temporary residents before you arrive.

Driver's license

Alberta driver's licenses are issued through registry agent offices. If your license is from a country or state with an exchange agreement with Alberta, you can usually swap it without a road test. Otherwise, you need to pass a knowledge test and a road test, and proof of past driving experience can help you skip parts of the graduated licensing system. You can drive on a valid foreign license for only a short time after becoming a resident, so start early.

Free settlement agencies help with housing, jobs, English classes, and paperwork. In Calgary, examples include the Centre for Newcomers and Calgary Catholic Immigration Society. In Edmonton, the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers is one of the largest. Many smaller cities have their own agencies. IRCC's online tool lists federally funded services near you.

Cost of living: Alberta is usually cheaper than British Columbia and Ontario for housing, and there is no provincial sales tax. Rents in Calgary and Edmonton rose quickly in recent years as the population grew, so do not assume housing is cheap. Winter clothing, a car (outside the city centers), and heating are real costs to plan for.

Many jobs in Alberta need a license before you can work. Examples include engineers (APEGA, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta), registered nurses (College of Registered Nurses of Alberta), physicians (College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta), teachers, and compulsory trades such as electrician and plumber.

• The Dedicated Health Care Pathway requires you to be licensed in an eligible health care profession, so start licensing before you apply.
• Get an Educational Credential Assessment for Express Entry (ECA guide); licensing bodies may assess you separately.
• Take an approved language test. AAIP streams set minimum language levels, and employers and regulators may want more.

• Express Entry: federal selection, including category draws for health care, trades, and French speakers.
• Rural Community Immigration Pilot: Claresholm.
• LMIA work permit or CUSMA professional work permit, then apply to the AAIP once you have Alberta experience.
• Study permit and the Post-Graduation Work Permit: Alberta graduates may qualify for the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream or, with work experience, the Alberta Opportunity Stream.
