Residente Temporal (Temporary Resident)

Residente temporal (temporary resident) is a Mexican immigration status for foreigners who want to live in Mexico for more than 180 days and up to 4 years. It is the most common residency for retirees, remote workers, and people moving for family or work.

How it works

Most people apply at a Mexican consulate abroad, then complete the canje in Mexico. The first card is usually valid for 1 year, then renewable for up to 3 more years.

Common bases are solvencia económica (financial solvency), a job offer, family unity, or study. As of 2026, the financial test is 680 UMA days of monthly income (about MXN 79,771) over 6 months, or about MXN 1,344,373 in average savings over 12 months.
