Residente Permanente (Permanent Resident)

Residente permanente (permanent resident) is a Mexican immigration status that lets a foreigner live in Mexico indefinitely, with the right to work without extra permission. The card does not need renewal for adults.

Main routes

  • Retirees: consulates grant it directly mainly to retirees with pension income. As of 2026, the test is 1,140 UMA days of monthly pension (about MXN 133,733) over 6 months, or about MXN 5,378,664 in average savings over 12 months.
  • After 4 years as a residente temporal, through cambio de condición.
  • Family ties: for example, spouses of Mexicans (usually after 2 years as temporary residents), and parents of Mexican children.

Permanent residents cannot keep a foreign-plated car in Mexico under a TIP. After 5 years of residence, you may apply for naturalization. See permanent residency for retirees and temporary to permanent.

Adult cards generally do not expire, but you must report changes to INM.
