Cambio de Condición (Change of Immigration Status)
Cambio de condición (change of condition) is the procedure at Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) to switch from one immigration status to another without leaving the country, for example from temporary resident to permanent resident.
Common cases
- Temporary to permanent after 4 years as a residente temporal.
- Temporary to permanent through family ties, for example spouses of Mexicans after 2 years, or parents of a Mexican child.
- Visitor to resident through family unity, when you have a qualifying Mexican or resident family member.
- Student to temporary resident in some cases.
Most tourists cannot change to residency from inside Mexico unless a family-unity or humanitarian rule applies; they must apply at a consulate. Apply before your current card expires. See change of status in Mexico and temporary to permanent.
