PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit)

A PGWP, or post-graduation work permit, is an open work permit for international students who graduate from an eligible program at a Canadian designated learning institution. It can be valid for up to 3 years.

Key rules

  • Apply within 180 days of getting your final marks, while holding valid status (or after it expired, with some limits).
  • The length depends on your program. Programs of 2 years or more, and most master's degrees, can give a 3-year permit.
  • You can get only one PGWP in your life.
  • You must meet language requirements and, for non-degree college programs, study in an eligible field. The 2026 field-of-study list is frozen at 1,107 program codes; bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree holders are exempt from the field rule.

Does every Canadian program qualify for a PGWP?

No. The school, program length, and in some cases field of study decide eligibility.

Can I get a PGWP at the border?

No. IRCC stopped accepting PGWP applications at the border in June 2024. Apply online.
