- Canada vs MexicoCanada chooses most permanent residents through a points system that rewards youth, education, language skills, and work experience, while Mexico grants residency to most people who can show enough income or savings, a job offer, or family ties. Mexico is the clear choice for retirees, since it offers permanent residency to retirees and Canada has no retirement visa. Canada is usually the better choice for younger skilled workers who want a job market with higher salaries and public health care once they are permanent residents.
- CEC vs FSWThe Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is for people with at least 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada in the last 3 years, and it needs no education credential and no proof of funds. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) is for skilled workers who may have gained their experience anywhere in the world, but it requires CLB 7 language scores, an assessed education credential, 67 points on a selection grid, and proof of funds unless exempt. Both feed into Express Entry, where the same CRS score ranks all candidates.
- E-2 vs EB-5 vs Gold CardThe E-2 is a renewable temporary visa for nationals of treaty countries who invest a substantial amount in a US business they run, with no fixed minimum. EB-5 is a green card for investing $800,000 or $1,050,000 in a business that creates 10 jobs, and the money can be returned if the project succeeds. The Gold Card is a green card track based on a $1 million gift that is not returned, plus a $15,000 fee, with few approvals so far.
- EB-1A vs EB-2 NIWThe EB-1A and the EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW) are the two main US green cards you can file for yourself, with no employer and no labor certification. The EB-1A is for people at the very top of their field who can show sustained acclaim, while the NIW is for people with an advanced degree or exceptional ability whose work has national importance. The EB-1A has a higher bar but usually a shorter wait; the NIW is easier to qualify for but shares the often longer EB-2 queue.
- Express Entry vs PNPExpress Entry is Canada's federal system that ranks skilled workers by a points score and invites the highest scorers to apply for permanent residence, while Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) let provinces pick people who meet local needs. The two often work together: a nomination through an Express Entry-linked (enhanced) provincial stream adds 600 points, which almost guarantees an invitation. Base provincial streams sit outside Express Entry and are the main PR route for many people who cannot qualify federally, including some lower-skilled workers.
- H-1B vs O-1The H-1B is for professionals in jobs that need a bachelor's degree, and most new H-1B workers must win a yearly lottery that is now weighted by wage. The O-1 is for people with extraordinary ability or achievement who can prove sustained acclaim, and it has no cap, no lottery, and no degree requirement. If you can meet the O-1 evidence standard, it avoids the lottery; if you cannot, the H-1B is the standard route for degree-holding professionals.
- IELTS vs CELPIPIRCC accepts both IELTS General Training and CELPIP-General (plus PTE Core) as proof of English for Express Entry and most other permanent residence programs, and results are valid for 2 years. CELPIP is fully computer-based, uses Canadian English, and its levels convert directly to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, while IELTS is available in far more countries and has a face-to-face speaking test. The best choice depends mostly on where you live and which format suits you, since both count the same once converted to CLB.
- TN vs H-1BTN status is open only to Canadian and Mexican citizens in about 60 professions listed in the USMCA trade agreement, and it has no cap, no lottery, and renewals with no set limit. The H-1B is open to any nationality in a specialty occupation, but most first-time applicants must win a wage-weighted lottery, and stays are generally limited to 6 years. The biggest practical difference is intent: the H-1B allows you to pursue a green card at the same time, while TN requires temporary intent.
- USA vs CanadaThe biggest difference is how each country picks immigrants: the US mostly needs a family member or employer to sponsor you and has long waits for many nationalities, while Canada selects most permanent residents by ranking them on points such as age, education, language, and work experience. Canada is usually more predictable for skilled workers without a sponsor, while the US is often faster for spouses and parents of citizens and offers routes for investors and people with extraordinary ability. Both countries tightened many rules in 2026.
- USA vs MexicoThe USA and Mexico work in almost opposite ways: US permanent residence usually requires a family or employer sponsor and can involve long waits, while Mexico grants residency to most people who can show enough income or savings, with no quotas or lotteries. Mexico also offers permanent residency directly to retirees, which the US does not. On the other hand, the US offers far more work opportunities and higher salaries, and its green card leads to citizenship after 5 years.
