Manitoba Career Employment Pathway: Closed in June 2026

The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) had three parts in its International Education Stream: the Career Employment Pathway, the Graduate Internship Pathway, and the International Student Entrepreneur Pilot.

The Career Employment Pathway was the broadest of the three. It was built for international students who finished an eligible program at a Manitoba post-secondary school and then found a long-term job in an occupation Manitoba listed as in demand. Its main appeal was speed. Graduates could seek a nomination soon after finding a qualifying job, without first building up months of work in the province.

That is the part that has ended. Manitoba now wants graduates to show a period of real work in the province before it nominates them. For the wider picture of how provinces choose nominees, see our PNP overview and our Manitoba guide.

Manitoba said the goal is clear and consistent criteria for all Manitoba graduates. In practice, this means graduates now compete through the Skilled Worker Stream, where work experience in Manitoba carries a lot of weight.

The closure came in a year when Manitoba ran many Skilled Worker draws. By the time of the announcement, the province had already held 11 Skilled Worker Stream draws in 2026, according to CIC News.

Manitoba told candidates with an active EOI under the Career Employment Pathway to do two things:

1. Check whether you qualify for the Skilled Worker in Manitoba pathway. This usually means you have worked in Manitoba for at least six months and have a long-term job offer. See Skilled Worker in Manitoba.
2. Update your profile if you qualify. When you update it, declare all of your Manitoba connections, including the post-secondary program you completed in the province.

If you do not have six months of Manitoba work yet, keep working and keep your status valid. You can update your profile once you meet the requirement.

If you had already sent a full application before the closure, contact the MPNP through its online webform to ask how your file will be handled. The MPNP stopped answering email enquiries on March 2, 2026.

Closing the Career Employment Pathway did not close the door for graduates. It changed the order of steps: work first, then nomination.

• Skilled Worker in Manitoba (Manitoba Work Experience Pathway). Work for a Manitoba employer for six months or more with a long-term job offer, then compete in EOI draws. Manitoba says it is targeting graduates in this situation. See Skilled Worker in Manitoba.
• Graduate Internship Pathway. If you finished a master's or doctoral degree in Manitoba and a Mitacs internship, this pathway is still open. See the Graduate Internship Pathway.
• Canadian Experience Class (CEC). One year of skilled work in Canada can qualify you for Express Entry without any provincial nomination. See the Canadian Experience Class.
• Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This is what lets you build the Canadian work experience the other routes need. See the PGWP guide.

Graduate routes in other provinces usually require you to have studied in that province, so moving is rarely a shortcut. British Columbia, for example, has also ended its International Graduate stream.

Outside large cities, you may also look at the Rural Community Immigration Pilot, which includes Steinbach, Altona/Rhineland, and Brandon in Manitoba. It needs a job offer from a designated employer.

The biggest risk after this change is running out of time on your work permit before you qualify for another route.

• Know your PGWP expiry date. Plan backward from it. You need six months of Manitoba work before most graduates can compete under Skilled Worker in Manitoba, plus time for a draw, an application, and nomination.
• Apply to extend before you expire if you are eligible for another permit. Applying on time can give you maintained status.
• Check spousal permits. Open work permits for spouses are now limited to certain cases. See the spousal open work permit rules.

If you are choosing a school now, plan on this new order: study, graduate, work in Manitoba for at least six months, then seek a nomination. Choose a program that leads to work in a field Manitoba needs, and check whether your program makes you eligible for a PGWP.
