Moving to Mexico from Brazil: Visas, the E-Visa, Residency and Citizenship
Brazilian citizens have needed a visa to visit Mexico since August 2022, but since February 5, 2026 they can apply online for a single-entry electronic visa when arriving by air, and a valid US, Canadian, UK, Japanese or Schengen visa or residence also exempts them. To live in Mexico, Brazilians apply for temporary or permanent residency at a Mexican embassy or consulate, usually through financial solvency, a job offer or family ties. As Latin Americans, Brazilians can apply for Mexican naturalization after 2 years of residence.

Do Brazilians need a visa for Mexico?
Yes. Since August 18, 2022, Brazilian citizens need a visa to visit Mexico. There are three ways to meet this:
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Electronic visa | Reopened on February 5, 2026. Apply online; single entry; for visitors without paid activities; arrival by air only. Airlines check it at check-in. |
| Consular visitor visa | Issued by a Mexican embassy or consulate. Needed for land or sea arrivals and more flexible, for example for multiple entries. |
| Exemption | A valid visa from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan or a Schengen country, or permanent residence in one of those countries. |
The officer at the port of entry makes the final decision. If your nationality needs a visa, you generally also need one to connect through a Mexican airport. See Mexico visa requirements and visa requirement changes.
Using the electronic visa: practical tips
- Apply only on the official SRE electronic visa site and keep the approval with your travel documents. Unofficial sites may charge extra fees.
- Match the details exactly to your passport, and travel with the same passport you used to apply.
- One entry only. If you leave Mexico, you need a new authorization or another valid document to return.
- Air arrivals only. Cruises, buses and car crossings need a consular visa or an exemption.
- Answer questions at the border. The e-visa does not guarantee entry. Carry your return ticket, accommodation details and proof of funds.
- Connections. If you only connect through Mexico to another country, check with your airline whether you need a Mexican visa for the transit.
Ways for Brazilians to move to Mexico
| Route | Who it fits | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Financial solvency | Remote workers, people with foreign income or savings | Temporary residency, 1-4 years |
| Job offer | People hired by a Mexican employer registered with INM | Temporary residency with work permission |
| Family unity | Spouses, children and parents of Mexicans or of foreign residents | Temporary or permanent |
| Student visa | Students in programs longer than 180 days | Temporary resident student |
| Retirees | Retirees with high pension income or savings | Permanent residency |
The electronic visa is only for visits. It does not let you live, work or study long term in Mexico, and you generally cannot switch from visitor to resident inside Mexico. See change of status.
How much money do you need?
Mexico sets the tests in days of UMA, updated every February. For 2026:
| Test | Temporary residency | Permanent residency (retirees) |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly income after tax, last 6 months | 79,770.80 pesos | 133,733.40 pesos (pension) |
| Average balance, last 12 months | 1,344,372.60 pesos | 5,378,663.50 pesos |
| Each dependent | + 25,808.20 pesos | + 25,808.20 pesos |
Consulates in Brazil convert these into reais or US dollars at their own rate. Ask your consulate for its current figure, and make sure your income clears it in every month of the review period. Use the solvency calculator.
Where do Brazilians apply?
- Embassy of Mexico in Brasília (consular section)
- Consulates General of Mexico in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro
- If you live legally in another country, apply at the Mexican consulate there. See Mexican consulates.
Documents. Brazil and Mexico are both members of the Apostille Convention. Brazilian birth, marriage and criminal record certificates can be apostilled at a Brazilian notary office (cartório). Documents in Portuguese need an official Spanish translation.
After a residency visa is issued, enter Mexico within 180 days and apply for your residence card at the National Migration Institute (INM) within 30 days. See the canje.
Working in Mexico
- Remote workers use solvency residency; confirm with your consulate how it treats foreign employment. See remote work rules.
- Mexican employers or clients require work permission from INM.
- Regulated professions usually need a Mexican professional license (cédula profesional), which requires recognition of your Brazilian degree by the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).
- Language. Spanish is close to Portuguese, but daily work, official procedures and contracts are in Spanish. Classes before and after the move make a real difference.
The 2-year naturalization track
Mexico's Nationality Law lets nationals of Latin American countries apply for naturalization after 2 years of residence instead of the usual 5. Brazilians qualify. You must show you speak Spanish and pass an exam on Mexican history and culture.
Mexico asks naturalizing applicants to renounce other nationalities. Since a 2023 constitutional amendment, Brazilians generally do not lose Brazilian nationality by acquiring another one, but confirm with Brazilian authorities. See naturalization.
