Mexican Consulate in Vancouver: Residency Visa Requirements and Process

The Consulate General of Mexico in Vancouver serves people who live in its consular district in British Columbia. Its website publishes detailed English pages for the temporary resident visa and the permanent resident visa.

It says foreigners who want to stay in Mexico indefinitely may apply in person for a permanent resident visa at the consular office closest to their place of residence. The same applies in practice to temporary residency.

If you are not a Canadian citizen, bring the original and a copy of the immigration document that shows your legal stay in Canada.

Check the Vancouver consulate's website for its current instructions on requesting a visa appointment. Mexican consulates in Canada use different booking methods (some use MiConsulado; Montreal uses email).

You must apply in person. Each applicant usually needs their own appointment. Bring all originals and photocopies on the day.

From the Vancouver consulate's visa pages:

1. The visa application form, printed on one page, double-sided, completed and signed.
2. A valid passport, original and a photocopy of the page with your photo and personal data.
3. Original and photocopy of your Canadian immigration document, if you are not a Canadian citizen.
4. One photo, 3.9 x 3.1 cm, face uncovered, no glasses, facing forward, in color, white background.
5. The visa fee, in cash or by Canadian debit card with Interac.
6. Documents for your category (see below).

Statements: the consulate says it does not accept electronic statements as proof of economic solvency unless they carry an original ink stamp from your bank or investment company.

For temporary residency by invitation, if the inviting institution will not cover your expenses, the consulate lists CAD 108,894 in savings or CAD 4,276 a month in income. The consulate accepts the visa fee only in cash or by Canadian debit card with Interac. The amount is the CAD equivalent of Mexico's visa fee (US$56 in 2026); confirm the current CAD amount with the consulate.

A residency visa is valid for one entry within 180 days. When you arrive, tell the immigration officer you are entering with a residency visa. Then, within 30 calendar days, apply at the National Migration Institute (INM) for your resident card. See the canje.
