Mexican Consulate in Toronto: Residency Visa Requirements and Process

The Consulate General of Mexico in Toronto serves people who live in its consular district in Ontario. Mexico also has an embassy in Ottawa and consulates in other Canadian cities, including Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Leamington. Apply at the office that serves where you live.

If you are not a Canadian citizen, bring proof of your legal status in Canada, such as a permanent resident card, work permit, study permit, or visitor record.

Many people moving from Ontario to Mexico also need the consulate for a household goods certificate (certificado de menaje de casa), which lets residents import their belongings once. See menaje de casa.

Check the visa section of the Toronto consulate's website for its current way of requesting a visa appointment. Mexican consulates in Canada use different methods: some use the MiConsulado system, and others, such as Montreal, ask applicants to email their documents first.

Each applicant usually needs their own appointment. Have all documents ready before you request one.

• The visa application form, completed and signed. Canadian consulates often ask for it printed on a single sheet, both sides.
• A valid passport, original and a copy of the photo page.
• Proof of legal status in Canada, if you are not a Canadian citizen.
• A photo meeting Mexico's size rules (for example, the Vancouver consulate asks for 3.9 x 3.1 cm, white background, no glasses).
• Proof for your category: pension or income deposits for 6 months, account statements for 12 months, family certificates, or an INM work authorization (NUT).
• Documents from a third country with an apostille or legalization, and a translation if needed.

Canadian consulates generally expect bank-stamped statements; plain online printouts may not be accepted.

Mexico's visa guidelines, in force since August 9, 2025, set the financial tests in days of UMA. With the 2026 UMA of 117.31 pesos a day:

Canadian consulates convert these amounts into Canadian dollars. In 2026, the Vancouver consulate lists CAD 6,461 a month or CAD 108,894 in savings for temporary residency, and the Montreal consulate lists CAD 6,460 or CAD 108,856. Payment is only in Canadian dollars, in cash, for the exact amount. The consulate adjusts the CAD amounts on the first business day of each month to reflect the exchange rate, so check the current table.

A residency visa is valid for one entry within 180 days. When you arrive, tell the immigration officer you are entering with a residency visa. Then, within 30 calendar days, apply at the National Migration Institute (INM) for your resident card. See the canje.
