Mexican Consulate in Montreal: Residency Visa Requirements and Process

The Consulate General of Mexico in Montreal serves people who live in its consular district in Quebec. Its website, in Spanish and English, explains each visa as a question: for example, "I want to live in Mexico on a temporary basis (less than 4 years). What visa do I need?"

It explains that foreigners who plan to live in Mexico between 6 months and 4 years need a temporary resident visa, and those who want to live there permanently as retirees or through family unity need a permanent resident visa.

If you are not a Canadian citizen, bring the original and a copy of your Canadian immigration document.

Family unity applications for permanent residency are accepted at the consulate only when the permanent resident or Mexican relative accompanies the applicant to the appointment.

The Montreal consulate books visa appointments by email. Send the consulate's visa address (listed on its website) your:

• Passport,
• Visa application form, and
• Proof of economic solvency,

as PDF files only. The consulate reviews them and replies with an appointment. You then attend in person with originals and copies.

• The visa application form, printed on a single sheet, both sides, completed and signed.
• A valid passport, original and a copy of the page with your photo and details.
• Original and copy of your Canadian immigration document, if you are not a Canadian citizen.
• A passport-style photo meeting Mexico's size rules.
• Certified copies of your bank, investment, or pension documents.
• Relationship documents for family members.
• The visa fee, in cash.

The Montreal consulate asks for the visa fee in cash. The amount is the CAD equivalent of Mexico's visa fee (US$56 in 2026, which the Toronto consulate listed as CAD 82 in July 2026). Confirm the exact current amount with Montreal.
