RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes)
The RFC, Registro Federal de Contribuyentes, is Mexico's federal taxpayer registry number, issued by the tax authority SAT (Servicio de Administración Tributaria). Individuals get a 13-character code.
When you need one
Foreign residents usually need an RFC to work for a Mexican employer, run a business, issue or receive official invoices (facturas), sell property, and sometimes to open a bank account or sign a lease.
To register, you normally book an appointment with SAT and bring your passport, resident card, CURP, and proof of address. SAT can also issue an e.firma (electronic signature) for filing online.
Having an RFC can create tax filing duties, so understand your obligations before registering. Tax residency depends on facts like where your home is, not only on your immigration status. See our RFC guide and taxes for residents.
