COMAR (Comisión Mexicana de Ayuda a Refugiados)

COMAR, the Comisión Mexicana de Ayuda a Refugiados (Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance), is the Mexican government agency that receives and decides asylum requests, granting refugee status or complementary protection to people who cannot safely return home.

How it works

You generally must apply within 30 business days of entering Mexico, with exceptions for good cause. While the claim is pending, you usually must stay in the state where you applied and check in regularly.

If COMAR recognizes you as a refugee, or grants complementary protection, the INM issues you a resident card, and refugees can get permanent residence. Recognized refugees can work, and may later apply for naturalization.
